IR LITE Simulation

A quick-run version of the world-famous Statecraft IR Simulation!

Students still receive the core IR Sim experience: they become the world leaders and discover the complex mix of international and domestic factors that must be balanced in order to run a thriving country. Through the engaging simulation students experience course concepts first-hand and gain a deep understanding of global politics.

The Lite version has a halved runtime of four weeks so it’s great for classes with time constraints or as an introductory Statecraft product for first-time users!

Statecraft is the future of educational engagement

Getting kids engaged in ideas is important. I don’t want kids to be passive receptacles of knowledge that they sit back in a test and two or three weeks later they promptly forget and never use [the information] again. Statecraft helps make learning sticky. I’ll use it again.

STUDENTS BECOME THE WORLD LEADERS

When students sign up for the Statecraft IR Lite Simulation they enter a rich fictional world where they must cooperate and compete to achieve global goals, competitive goals, and quality of life goals. They’ll start by taking a Foreign Attitude Survey so that the system can group them into a country with other likeminded classmates. In the “Lite” version of the simulation countries will already be configured for students so they can start playing immediately.

The objective of the game is to gather as many points as possible and cultivate the most impressive country the world has ever seen!

Goals

In the Lite version of the simulation students work towards Cooperative Global Goals that are shared with the entire world such as ending world hunger, plus a special Secret Goal that involves either military spending or domestic quality of life.

Strategy

To gather points students can pursue a myriad of strategies: from avoiding conflict for domestic wellbeing to cautiously collaborative strategies that maximize economic synergies while carefully checking other countries' imperial motives. It is possible that every country could get a perfect score and all thrive; however (just like in the real world) that rarely happens.

Domestic Factors

Every turn countries will produce resources students must decide how to invest; they’ll bump up against the classic “guns vs. butter” conundrum. They’ll also get a Quality of Life score that equates to points for their citizens' health, welfare, environment, safety and education.

International Factors

Countries in the Lite IR Simulation are grouped into alliances to deal with big world events such as Ice Mountain melting and threatening to flood the entire globe! Both simulation events and classmates create drama and excitement that demonstrate how intertwined the world truly is.

Statecraft creates situations where students personally experience key historical and world politics concepts including state sovereignty, the collective action problem, international organizations, bureaucratic politics, and comparative advantage. Along the way they’ll have questions and struggles that can become prime teachable moments.

Regardless of their world ranking every student will grapple first-hand with the complex mix of international and domestic pressures that world leaders face, finishing with a much deeper understanding of International Relations.

How is the Lite Version different from the Full Sim?

Since this is a “Lite” version of the simulation you’ll only experience about 30% of the features and capabilities available in the full Statecraft IR Simulation. That said, you’ll still get a lot of benefits! You’ll still create intense engagement as students experience lessons first-hand. It’s a perfect teaching tool to add to your course last-minute in response to moving classes online. It’s also a great opportunity to try out a Statecraft Simulation if you’ve been curious but not ready to implement the full version in your class.

You can read about the full suite of features offered in the comprehensive version of the Simulation on the Statecraft IR Product page >>

an immersive virtual world

The Statecraft World Map is where all of the action happens! Students can log in via a desktop computer or a mobile device. The map illustrates the geographical layout of the world showing resource centers, deserts and mountains as well as the climate situation. The colored lines delineate territory zones belonging to each country. The icons mark cities, military units, landmarks and terrorist occupations. Once a student spies on a foreign country those cities and military units will also be exposed. Clicking on the icons reveals more information and there’s a detailed legend key to offer extra map guidance.

In the nav bars at the top students can access all of the critical information for their world as well as look at their intelligence data for other countries. They’ll be able to access their Diplomacy, Military, Intelligence, Domestic and Research activities as well as manage their Resources.
